When traveling

One souvenir that is easy to pickup and pack in my suitcase is a sewing magazine. In the US, I used to find English language Burda at Borders. Unfortunately, that chain no longer exists. As I travel around the world and to larger cities in the US, I am able to find well stocked newsstands. Even though the magazine may be in German, Italian or Japenese, I can still follow the diagrams and trace the full size patterns.

I found an abundance of offerings this trip. My prize is the special edition Burda on vintage 1970's style. This is funny since I sewed so many of my clothes in the 70s. Among my favorites were the double knit pant suits that I took on my first trip to Europe with my Grandmother Palmer. I have talked about her before on this blog. She made dresses for her three daughters through the depression years.

Last night, I left my guys pondering their restaurant choice in old town Bratislava to find a newsstand. As is often the case, I can't even read the rack section headings, I find the right place by cover pictures alone. There were several Burdas including one I got earlier in Austria. I grabbed two and didn't even open to check the inside. I quickly paid and left.

When we had settled and ordered at the restaurant, I pulled them out of the bag. The Burda Plus was is Czech/Slovak. The 70's vintage Style was lovely with beautiful fashion photos. It took me a short while to realize that I could actually read the captions. It was in English! What an added joy!
